We need to know the types of extinguishers, the types of fires, and the phases that fires go through.<\/p>\n<h4>Anatomy of the Fire Extinguisher<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Trigger<\/strong> &#8211; releases the solvent<\/li>\n<li><strong>Safety pin<\/strong> \u2013 prevents accidental extinguishing<\/li>\n<li><strong>Handle<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pressure Gauge<\/strong> \u2013 green equals fully charged, red means not<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hose\/Nozzle<\/strong> \u2013 directs the stream (use a sweeping motion)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>PRO-TIP:<\/p>\n<p>Regularly inspect your extinguisher(s)!<\/p>\n<p>Check for clean, readable labels and instructions, no rust &amp; full pressure on\u00a0 the gauge. Log your inspections!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Fire Extinguishing Safety Rules<\/h4>\n<p>But First!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are at work, pull the fire alarm and notify the fire department (or assign someone to this task).<\/li>\n<li>If you are at home, notify the fire department.<\/li>\n<li>Assist anyone\u00a0 in danger, or cannot evacuate on their own. Remember not to put yourself at risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>IF IT&#8217;S SAFE:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Notify someone that you are about to attempt extinguishing.<\/li>\n<li>Identify your evacuation path\n<ul>\n<li>Never allow the flame to come between you and your way out!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Here&#8217;s the Acronym of most importance: <strong>PASS<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>P<\/strong>ull (the pin)<\/li>\n<li><strong>A<\/strong>im (the nozzle)<\/li>\n<li><strong>S<\/strong>queeze (the trigger)<\/li>\n<li><strong>S<\/strong>weep (sweeping motion)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Fight (the fire) or Flee (to safety)?<br \/>\nQuestions to Consider Ourselves:<\/u><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Is the fire small enough for my efforts to even be effective?<\/li>\n<li>Do I remember how to use the extinguisher?<\/li>\n<li>Do I have the appropriate extinguisher available for this type of fire?<\/li>\n<li>Is the air safe to breath?<\/li>\n<li>Do I have an evacuation route in place?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Types of Fire: A, B, C, D, K<\/h4>\n<p>Here are 5 types of fire and examples:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class A<\/strong>: wood, paper, cloth, rubber, &amp; many plastics<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class B:<\/strong> flammable liquids<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gas, propane, butane, petroleum greases, tars, oils, oil based paints, solvents, alcohol<\/li>\n<li>NOT cooking oil or cooking fats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Type Class C<\/strong>: energized electrical equipment<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Computers, appliances, motors, transformers<\/li>\n<li>ONLY if there\u2019s power to the item. No electrical supply and these items fall under a different category<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Class D:<\/strong> combustible metals<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Magnesium, calcium, sodium, lithium, potassium, phosphorus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Class K:<\/strong> vegetable oils, animal oils, cooking grease and fats<\/p>\n<h4>Types of Extinguishers<\/h4>\n<p>There are many types of extinguishers on the market. Be sure that whichever one you pick is appropriate for your work or home space. Here are a few that are available. Learn from my mistakes and know that extinguishers are not all &#8220;universal&#8221;!<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Water &amp; Foam: Class A fires only<\/li>\n<li>Carbon Dioxide: Class B&amp;C, ineffective on A<\/li>\n<li>Multi-purpose Dry Chemical: Class A, B, C<\/li>\n<li>Ordinary Dry Chemical: Class B&amp;C<\/li>\n<li>Dry Powder Chemical: Class D only<\/li>\n<li>Clean Agent: Class A, B, C<\/li>\n<li>Wet Chemical: Class K<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote><p>Most commonly in your home you are likely to have a Multi-purpose or a Clean Agent style extinguisher that covers classes A, B, and C.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a kitchen connoisseur, having a Class K in your kitchen might be a beneficial preparation to have!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Stages of a Fire:<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Incipient: Phase 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flame still in beginning stage<\/li>\n<li>Small flame, not wide spread at this time<\/li>\n<li>Smoke allows for visibility &amp; almost normal breathing in the space<\/li>\n<li>Heat emitted is low<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Growth: Phase 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sufficient oxygen and fuel available<\/li>\n<li>Thicker layer of smoke forming<\/li>\n<li>No condensation on windows<\/li>\n<li>Windows may show brown staining or start to crack<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Fully Developed: Phase 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dark\/black smoke<\/li>\n<li>Dense\/thick smoke<\/li>\n<li>Substantial heat<\/li>\n<li>Blackened windows<\/li>\n<li>Visible exterior flame<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Decay: Phase 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fuel and oxygen is running out<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2701\" src=\"https:\/\/bridensolutions.ca\/BridenAcademy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/fire-fighter-in-front-of-a--300x200.jpg\" alt=\"fire burning\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bridensolutions.ca\/BridenAcademy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/fire-fighter-in-front-of-a--300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bridensolutions.ca\/BridenAcademy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/fire-fighter-in-front-of-a--768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bridensolutions.ca\/BridenAcademy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/fire-fighter-in-front-of-a--705x470.jpg 705w, https:\/\/bridensolutions.ca\/BridenAcademy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/fire-fighter-in-front-of-a-.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Fire Size: Extinguish or Evacuate?<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Evacuate If:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fire is a flammable solvent (such as fuel)<\/li>\n<li>5.6 square meters or larger<\/li>\n<li>Partially hidden in a wall or ceiling &#8211; size is undetermined<\/li>\n<li>Cannot be reached from standing &#8211; meaning\u00a0 above your head or taller than your head<\/li>\n<li>Heat is too intense<\/li>\n<li>You need to crawl or be on the floor because the heat is too thick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Extinguish If:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>#1 &amp; most importantly: you feel comfortable trying. The first rule is that if you do not feel safe and secure, evacuate and let the professionals take care of the situation.<\/li>\n<li>Limited to the original material that was ignited\n<ul>\n<li>Ex: A box of Kleenex lit up, and has not spread, then you may attempt extinguishing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is contained<\/li>\n<li>Flame is not higher than your head<\/li>\n<li>Good visibility<\/li>\n<li>Protective gear not required for your safety<\/li>\n<li>Room temperature not raised<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Prevention<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Test smoke detectors (monthly or on a calendared schedule)<\/li>\n<li>No smoking indoors. Never leave buds on ground outdoors. Always properly dispose of these!<\/li>\n<li>Candles \u2013 never leave unattended<\/li>\n<li>Store flammable products properly<\/li>\n<li>Know where all shut offs are, such as gas lines, circuit breakers, appliances and fuses<\/li>\n<li>Maintain your electrical cords \u2013 check for frayed or damaged cords. Check for power bars and over-burdened electric plug ins<\/li>\n<li>Inspect heating sources (furnace filters, hot water heater, regular maintenance)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Conclusion:<\/h5>\n<p>And just like that, you are ready to extinguish in the hopefully unlikely event of a mis-placed fire!
